The Adventures of Mr. Potato Head at the Discovery Science Center

Friday, July 8, 2011

Did you know that just a short drive down the freeway from Disneyland is the Discovery Science Center?
Right now they have a new exhibit called The Adventures of Mr. Potato Head running through Sept 11, 2011.
Being big Toy Story and Mr. Potato Head fans in the Magical Days with the Mouse household, I knew we had to make a visit.
Join us in this little tour before heading out yourself!

You will go on four educational adventures with Mr. Potato Head including SPUD Overboard, SPUD Quest, SPUD Safari and Space S.P.U.D.
We entered SPUD Safari first.

"While roaming jungles with MR. POTATO HEAD, enjoy a pretend mudslide or venture inside a cave in search of mysterious objects. Listen carefully to identify sounds in the jungle, discover camouflaged and hidden creatures, and gain a different perspective by using special lenses and cameras to see the world through the eyes of silly birds, bugs and animals."
The pretend mudslide was such a big hit, that the Little One didn't want to leave. There is also a cave to wander through below the mudslide.
Here you listen to the sounds of the jungle and identify them.
Hop in this Jeep while wearing a safari hat, and have fun pressing buttons and talking on the CB.
Take a seat with Mr. Potato Head and observe wild life with him over the tree branch.

Next we entered Space S.P.U.D. (Space Potatoes United for Discovery).
"Join Commander MR. POTATO HEAD aboard the S.P.U.D. space station, where you’ll learn about repair and maintenance to the station. Sit inside and control your journey from the commander’s chair, use the intergalactic translator, explore the galaxy and conduct experiments at the isolation glove box."
Right next to Space S.P.U.D. is SPUD Quest.
"While on an archeological dig in search of the statue of King Tato, you must decipher “tatoglyphs” and solve mazes to find the statue’s secret caché. Use special maps to explore the treasure chamber and excavate the dig site to uncover fun artifacts from the King’s past, while reconstructing the King’s crown and weighing the discoveries in MR. POTATO HEAD’s research tent. "

The Little One is too young to decipher "tatoglyphs," but he had loads of fun going through the treasure chamber.
That leaves us to the last adventure with Mr. Potato Head, SPUD Overboard.

"Ocean explorer Jacques Coustato will guide you on an underwater adventure to build fanciful reefs, meet a friendly octopus and wise clam, and enjoy simulated snorkeling adventures. Learn by finding small surprises and a sea horse race in the kelp bed, operating the spud sub, experimenting with sounds from above and below the waves, and generating underwater sparkle using the sub’s disco-ball antenna. "
There is a fun water wall to take pictures with, as a snorkeling Mr. Potato Head watches from above.
The Little One is 2 years old, and although some of the exhibit is lost on him, he still had fun exploring. The SPUD Safari was the biggest hit with him, so much so that we had a hard time getting him to move on.

If you go on a Saturday or Sunday, then you will also get a chance to meet and have your photograph taken with Safari Mr. Potato Head in his tent. Check the Discovery Science Center website for times to meet Mr. Potato Head or check once you have entered.

Of course there is much more to explore at the Discovery Science Center. On the second floor is the Science of Hockey (which we all enjoyed on a previous trip), Dino Quest is located outside (a HUGE hit with the Little One) and much more.

The Adventures of Mr. Potato Head runs now through September 11, 2011.

The Discovery Science Center is located at:
2500 North Main Street
Santa Ana, Ca 92705

Open Monday-Sunday 10am-5pm.
Visit their website for more information and tickets.
